A subsidiary of Hong Kong-listed Geely Holdings plans to make low-speed electric vehicles (EVs) under an agreement with Kandi Vehicles. Geely's 50-50 joint venture with the NASDAQ-listed company ties China's cheap car maker, with a low-speed EV specialist. Starting with capital budget of CNY1 billion (USD160 million), the joint venture plans research and development, production, marketing and sales of electric vehicles on the Chinese mainland.

Taiwan's Environmental Protection Administration (EPA) has approved an environmental assessment of the Central Taiwan Science Park (CTSP) in Changhua, although water issues continue to be the main issue. The EPA has agreed that all CTSP-discharged waste water will be closely monitored for contaminants.

As we prepare for the Year of the Snake, some lunar New Year charms and accessories, found in the Philippine capital, Manila, might not exactly bring good fortune. The Ecowaste Coalition, a consumer safety watchdog, has discovered dangerous chemicals in 28 lucky charms and accessories, including a fertility amulet with a high level of lead that ironically could induce miscarriage and premature childbirth.

In his first policy address, Hong Kong Chief Executive CY Leung announced plans to introduce legislation for at-berth fuel switching during the next legislative session, continue discussions with Guangdong officials on extending fuel switching to other places in the Pearl River Delta (PRD), and for shoreside power at the new Kai Tak Cruise Terminal, scheduled to open in June.

Government representatives from 19 Asia Pacific countries are meeting in Bangkok to look at ways to catalyze fast action to reduce the impacts of short-lived climate pollutants – so-called SLCPs – in the region. SLCPs – such as black carbon or soot, methane, tropospheric ozone and some hydrofluorocarbons – are responsible for a substantial fraction of both the warming experienced to date and the current rate of global warming and can be dangerous air pollutants, with various detrimental impacts on human health, agriculture and ecosystems.
