Hainan releases 200 green vehicles into the public transport system

More than 200 clean tech public transport vehicles were put into service in Haikou, capital of south China's Hainan Province, at the weekend.

The new energy vehicle fleet are composed of 30 electric buses, 170 hybrid buses and 27 electric taxis, according to Xhinua.

The Haikou municipal government also plans to expand the environmentally friendly public transport vehicle fleet to 1,050 by the end of next year. During the five years between 2006 and 2010, the Haikou municipal government has pumped more than CNY80 million (USD12.5 million) into the city's public transport system.

Hainan's scheme is part of the country's new energy vehicle plan that aims to have more than 500,000 electric, hybrid and fuel-cell vehicles on the road by 2015 and 5 million by 2020.
