Smart phone rivals Apple and Samsung now share a rather ignominious position after having both been slammed on child exploitation and environmental pollution charges by environmental group Friends of the Earth (FoE).
An investigation into 300 firms has revealed that more than half have disposed of chemical waste without proper authorization, according to South Korea’s Environment Ministry.
LCD panel makers including Samsung Electronics Co., LG Electronics Inc. (066570) and Foxconn Technology Co. may convert factories to produce thin-film solar panels when demand more than triples for electricity produced from sunlight, Bloomberg reported yesterday.
The nascent solar arm of electronics giant, Samsung has been shuffled into subsidiary, Samsung SDI, known originally for flat panel display manufacturing but more recently for lithium ion battery manufacturing. Samsung said that the transaction, valued at approximately US$148 million was to 'manage the company's resources more efficiently and focus more on its key businesses.' Samsung SDI will take over the solar cell business on July 1, 2011.
Samsung and Korean Government MOU signing for green energy complex

The Samsung Group has signed a memorandum with the South Korean government for the development of a "green energy industrial complex" on 11.5 square kilometers of reclaimed land in North Jeolla Province over a 20-year period from 2021.
Samsung Electronics and KT reached an agreement to develop green IT systems. Under the deal, KT will use Samsung's energy-saving memory chips in its servers at new cloud computing centers.
