SB Energy, the renewable energy arm of Japanese telecom and Internet group Softbank, is planning a wind farm in Hokkaido with as many as 500 turbines and a combined output of 1-GW. Company spokesman Kenichi Yuasa told Bloomberg that SB Energy is in discussion with local government officials to scale the project to meet power needs of the country’s northernmost prefecture, which has a population of 5.5 million.

Japan opened several solar energy parks on Sunday as its new feed-in tariff (FiT) law came into force, requiring the country’s 10 regional electricity companies to purchase renewable energy at a fixed prices in a push for alternatives to nuclear power. Ahead of the start of its new FiT regime the Japanese government held a press conference on Friday to present three long-term energy policy options for public debate. It aims to select one of the three in August, officially shifting the country away from its previous goal of raising the share of power generated by nuclear energy to at least 50 percent by 2030.
According to a report from The Japan Times SB Energy, the recently formed renewable energy subsidiary of Softbank Corp, has proposed developing a solar photovoltaic power plant on 480 hectares near Tomakomai, Hokkaido, with as much as 340-MW of peak generating capacity.
