Palm oil is a slippery business. Large plantations often displace local farming communities, leading to land rights disputes. Peat-swamp forest, primary forest and other high-value conservation areas valued for biodiversity and greenhouse-gas capturing abilities are often cleared to plan palm for oil production. The good news is, big business and big consuming countries are making strides to support a palm oil industry that is more sustainable and which manages those affected more equitably.

Over fifty countries and 86 private companies have joined forces behind the move to factor the value of natural assets like clean air, clean water, forests and other ecosystems into business decision-making and countries systems of national accounting. Fifty-seven countries and the European Commission are supporting a communiqué that calls on governments, the UN system, international financial institutions and other international organizations to strengthen the implementation of natural capital accounting around the world.

US company Solazyme has nearly doubled the estimates of funds raised from its planned initial placement offering (IPO) on the NASDAQ Stock Exchange, up to USD184 million.
